📖 Overview

Zul'Farrak is a troll city built into the desert of Tanaris and is universally regarded as one of vanilla WoW's finest dungeon designs. The open-air layout is unique — much of ZF takes place under the desert sky rather than in enclosed corridors. The Sandfury Trolls occupy the city and worship the blood god Hakkar.

ZF's centrepiece is the pyramid stairs fight — a massive multi-wave encounter where the group defends prisoners on a stepped pyramid against wave after wave of trolls. It is chaotic, exciting, and unlike anything else in vanilla. Sergeant Bly's betrayal after the pyramid fight is one of the game's best scripted moments.

💀 Bosses

01
Antu'sul
EliteHumanoid
A troll shaman who calls hydra adds throughout the fight. Kill the hydras before focusing him — they regenerate HP rapidly and overwhelm a healer managing boss damage simultaneously.
Summon Servant: Hydra adds spawn throughout. Kill immediately every time.
02
Theka the Martyr
EliteHumanoid
A troll who can be triggered by touching his cage. He applies a powerful disease and enters a ghost form making him immune to physical damage. Casters only during ghost phase.
Ghost Form: Immune to physical. Casters DPS only. Disease: Cure immediately.
03
Nekrum & Pyramid Fight
EliteHumanoid
The pyramid stairs fight. Free the prisoners then defend the pyramid against troll waves while killing Nekrum and Murta. The most exciting encounter in any vanilla dungeon at this level.
Wave management: AoE the troll waves. Kill bosses while holding the stairs. Don't let prisoners die.
04
Sergeant Bly & crew
EliteHumanoid
After the pyramid fight, Bly and his crew betray the group. Turn on all five simultaneously. Tank them in a corner and AoE them down — they are not particularly hard if you see it coming.
Betrayal: All five turn hostile at once. Tank corner, AoE burn. Be ready for it.
05
Gahz'rilla
EliteFinal BossBeast
The dungeon's final boss — a massive hydra summoned at the altar using the Mallet of Zul'Farrak. He hits hard and jumps on random party members. Reward: the Carrot on a Stick quest trinket.
Amphibious Assault: Jumps on a random player. Requires Mallet: Must have the Mallet of Zul'Farrak (from Jintha'Alor) to summon him.

⚔️ Recommended Classes

ZF rewards balanced compositions with strong AoE. The pyramid fight needs a Mage or Warlock to clear troll waves efficiently — without AoE the waves build up overwhelming numbers. Hunters are excellent for kiting stray adds during the pyramid chaos.

💡 Tips & Warnings

💡

Pyramid fight prep: Before freeing the prisoners, assign roles — who AoEs waves, who focuses bosses, who watches the prisoner sides. The fight starts the instant you free them. No backing out once it begins.

⚔️

Mallet required: Get the Mallet of Zul'Farrak from Jintha'Alor in the Hinterlands before entering if you want to summon Gahz'rilla. The Carrot on a Stick trinket is worth the effort.

⚠️

Sergeant Bly betrayal: After the pyramid fight Bly turns hostile. Some first-timers are caught completely off guard. If anyone in the group hasn't done ZF before, warn them before the pyramid fight ends so they're ready.
