Overview
Gilneas City is the community’s most-praised custom dungeon on Turtle WoW, and it earns that reputation. Released in Patch 1.17, it takes place inside the sealed, shuttered city of Gilneas — a zone that existed as beautiful but empty scenery in standard vanilla WoW. The Turtle WoW team filled it with a fully realised dungeon centred on the political collapse of the Greymane royal family and the dark forces that moved in after the gates closed.
The aesthetic is grey stone gothic architecture, candlelit corridors, haunted streets and aristocratic decay. The dungeon is also interwoven with the server-wide Scythe of Elune legendary questline — one of the key questline steps passes through Gilneas City, making it relevant content even at level 60 when a guildie needs to complete it. If you only do one custom dungeon on Turtle WoW, make it this one.
Sweet spot levels: 43–47 is ideal. The dungeon is tuned at a ZF / early Maraudon difficulty level. At 43 it will be a genuine challenge; by 48 you’ll be farming it smoothly. The quest XP and gear rewards are exceptional for the bracket — easily comparable to or better than ZF.
Bosses
Gilneas City has seven bosses spread across the dungeon’s multiple wings. Each boss is tied to a different thread of the Greymane collapse — corrupt nobles, Worgen, the Gilneas Militia, and the architect of the city’s downfall at the end. The storytelling through the bosses is exceptional by dungeon standards.
Quest List
Gilneas City has over 15 custom quests, the highest count of any dungeon on the server. Many form multi-step chains that unfold as you progress through the dungeon. The Speedz1337 addon is essential here — without it you will miss quest pickups that only appear after completing earlier steps. Do not rush. Read the quest text. The storytelling is the best the server has produced.

Quest order matters: Pick up The Sealed City and start the Genn Greymane Must Die! chain before entering — the chain has prerequisite steps in Silverpine. If you are on the Scythe of Elune legendary questline, pick up The Wolf, the Crone, and the Scythe first and loot the Blessed Torch from the brazier near the dungeon entrance before the Phantom Queen encounter.
Recommended Classes & Roles
Gilneas City is a humanoid and undead-heavy dungeon with shadow damage as the primary threat. The Phantom Queen fight requires specific interaction with the Blessed Torch item, making preparation and awareness more important than raw throughput. The dungeon rewards deliberate play — the Phantom Queen and the Echo of Genn both have mechanics that punish unprepared groups regardless of gear.
Composition Tips
Paladin is exceptional here — Turn Undead and Consecration tear through the ghost and Worgen packs, and Blessing of Freedom is invaluable for the Echo of Genn’s movement-impair abilities. A Warrior tank is reliable for the Echo of Genn’s Worgen transformation phase, where Shield Wall buys critical time to reposition. Priest is the strongest healer choice: Dispel Magic removes the Fear and Silence debuffs that Lady Ashveil and the Phantom Queen apply constantly. At least one interrupt is required for the Phantom Queen’s Wail of the Damned — assign one DPS to watch for the cast.
Loot Highlights
Gilneas City loot is tuned for the 43–50 bracket and is among the best itemised gear available to players in that range. The shadow resistance pieces from the Phantom Queen and Lady Ashveil are genuinely useful going into Sunken Temple. The quest rewards are the real draw — the Genn Greymane Must Die! chain finale item is competitive with late-Maraudon gear.

Quest: Genn Greymane Must Die! | One-Hand Sword | Best quest reward. Agility + attack power. Rogue / Warrior DPS weapon. Competitive until late Maraudon |
Tips & Warnings
Before You Enter
Start the Genn Greymane Must Die! chain in Silverpine Forest before arriving — it has prerequisites outside the dungeon and you cannot pick it up inside. If you are on the Scythe of Elune questline, make absolutely sure you have The Wolf, the Crone, and the Scythe active and loot the Blessed Torch from the brazier near the entrance or the Phantom Queen fight cannot be completed. Check your map with the Speedz1337 addon installed.
Shadow resistance: If you have any shadow resistance gear sitting in your bags, equip it before Lady Ashveil and the Phantom Queen. The Shadow Bolt Volley and spectral phase shadow damage both scale off your resistance — even 40–60 shadow resistance makes these fights noticeably smoother for the healer.
The Phantom Queen’s Spectral Phase
The Phantom Queen becomes immune to all physical damage when she enters her spectral phase. The only way to break it is to use the Blessed Torch item — if anyone in the group hasn’t looted it from the brazier near the entrance, you cannot progress. Do not vendor or destroy it. During the phase she will cast Wail of the Damned — an AoE silence — so plan your interrupt rotation around the phase transitions, not a static cooldown schedule.
Genn Greymane Echo — Worgen Transformation: At 50% health Genn transforms and immediately begins cleaving in a wide frontal arc. The tank must reposition him the instant the transformation animation starts — facing him away from the group before the cleave lands. Melee who stay in front at this moment will likely die. Call it out verbally or in chat.
Managing Fears
Lady Ashveil fears the tank. The Gilnean Judge stuns the tank with Gavel Strike. The Echo of Genn silences all party members with Royal Decree. All three of these happen in sequence in the back half of the dungeon and can spiral into wipes if your group is not communicating. Designate one person to call incoming fears and assign who taunts back after Lady Ashveil’s Fear. Trinkets that break crowd control are worth equipping for this dungeon.
Turtle WoW tip: Gilneas City is one of the best places to use your Traveler’s Tent rested XP boost. Log out inside the dungeon or in the camp near the Gilneas gate to bank rested XP before your next run. With 15+ quests and rested XP, this dungeon can push you through multiple levels in a single sitting at the 43–47 range.
