The route at a glance
Gadgetzan turns Tanaris into one of the cleanest 40s hubs. Clear Wastewander and pirate loops in stages, gather Zul'Farrak quests from multiple zones, and save deep southern travel until several objectives align.
Tanaris quest route
40-43: Gadgetzan perimeter
Take the flight path and combine Wastewander, water, basilisk and scavenger objectives near the northern roads.
43-45: Steamwheedle coast
Stack pirate, turtle and coastal objectives. Open every wanted poster and neutral follow-up before leaving town.
44-48: Zul'Farrak chapter
Assemble the dungeon quest bundle, including remote chains, then run the instance while its rewards still matter.
47-50: southern desert
Bundle Thistleshrub, ogre, insect and exploration objectives. Use Un'Goro or Feralas when only isolated quests remain.
Key quest chains worth grouping together
Wastewander Water Pouch
A repeatable turn-in can supplement progress, but ordinary stacked quests should remain the priority.
Pirates and Steamwheedle
The coastal campaign advances through camps and ships; bag space matters.
Zul'Farrak collection
The Mallet and several valuable quests originate outside Tanaris, so prepare before advertising a group.
Travel, hearthstone and handoffs
Core hubs: Gadgetzan · Steamwheedle Port · Zul'Farrak · Caverns of Time.
Take every flight path on first arrival. Bind near the hub serving most current objectives, then change the hearthstone when the quest centre moves. Sell, repair and train during planned handoffs rather than interrupting every circuit.
Common Tanaris mistakes
- Running Zul'Farrak before collecting the remote quest chain rewards.
- Travelling to the extreme south for one yellow quest.
- Forgetting Gadgetzan is a contested neutral town on PvP realms.
Where to go after Tanaris
Your best alternative is Feralas, Searing Gorge or Un'Goro Crater. Changing zone is not abandoning a route; Classic deliberately spreads useful quests across overlapping level bands.
Tanaris leveling FAQ
What level should I start Tanaris?
The practical range is 40-50. Enter near the lower end only when the opening quests are yellow or green; Hardcore characters should generally arrive later.
Should I finish every quest?
No. Skip isolated, low-drop-rate or elite quests when forming a group or travelling would cost more time than moving to Feralas, Searing Gorge or Un'Goro Crater.
Is this route for Classic Era?
Yes. It is written for official WoW Classic Era and avoids later-expansion quest hubs and Turtle WoW custom content.
