Blackrock Depths

Recommended levels, location and preparation for an ordinary Blackrock Depths group—not a boosted carry.

The short recommendation

Do not advertise a vague ‘full BRD’ unless the group genuinely has several hours. Form around a purpose: Prison/Detention Block, Arena and Angerforge, Grim Guzzler, Vault, Lava run, Emperor, or specific attunement and quest objectives. Level 55+ is the comfortable target for deeper city routes.

Choose the run before inviting

Prison / key

Detention Block, Interrogator Gerstahn and Fineous Darkvire objectives. Complete Dark Iron Legacy while dead outside to earn the Shadowforge Key.

Arena / Angerforge

A common gear run through Ring of Law toward General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach.

Guzzler / Vault

Targets tavern, Plugger, Hurley and Dark Coffer or Heart of the Mountain objectives.

Emperor / lava

A deeper route toward Ambassador Flamelash, Seven, Lyceum and Emperor; confirm whether the group uses the lava shortcut.

Group-finder wording: use the exact route, required key or shortcut, and final boss. Clear expectations prevent more failed Classic groups than an extra level of gear.

Before travelling

  1. Pick up Attunement to the Core outside the instance at level 55; the objective sits near the Molten Core portal.
  2. Die and speak to Franclorn Forgewright above the lava before the run if you need the Shadowforge Key chain.
  3. Bring repair money, bag space and at least 90 minutes even for a focused route.
  4. State Marshal Windsor/Onyxia, Jail Break, Heart of the Mountain or Emperor requirements before forming.
Version warning: this guide is for official Classic Era. Seasonal, Turtle WoW and later-expansion layouts or quest changes are intentionally excluded.

Quest pickup checklist

Classic dungeon quests often begin several zones or chain steps away. Check these before the group travels; the note tells you when a prerequisite matters.

Boss and event warnings

EncounterWhat the group must know
Ring of LawKill the announced arena opponent; control adds and avoid overpulling spectators.
General AngerforgeControl reinforcements and burn the correct target when adds arrive.
Golem Lord ArgelmachInterrupt or control his golems; avoid letting the room become a chain pull.
Ambassador FlamelashDestroy or control fire adds before they empower him.
The SevenA sequence rather than one target; recover resources between spirits when possible.
Magmus and EmperorUse line-of-sight at Magmus. On Emperor, confirm whether Moira must survive for the quest before anyone attacks her.

Notable reasons to run it

  • Hand of Justice — General Angerforge; famous physical-damage trinket
  • Ironfoe — Emperor Dagran Thaurissan; very rare mace
  • Ban'thok Sash — Ok'thor in Ring of Law; strong caster belt
  • Second Wind — Golem Lord Argelmach; useful healing trinket
  • Savage Gladiator Chain — Gorosh in Ring of Law; rare melee chest
  • Blackveil Cape — High Interrogator Gerstahn; useful early caster cloak

Loot tables are broad and drop chances vary. Treat this as a target shortlist, not a promise that every item is best for every spec or phase.

Role checklist

Tank

Own the route

Mark dangerous targets, use line-of-sight, watch patrols and pause before scripted events. State when a pull depends on crowd control.

Healer

Plan the recovery

Drink before events, call for dispels and tell the group when mana is not ready. Do not let an impatient pull conceal the real cause of a wipe.

Damage

Control beats padding

Interrupt, dispel, protect the healer and respect marked crowd control. A dead dangerous caster improves the run more than area damage on harmless targets.

Common wipe and wasted-time risks

  • Starting without agreeing a route and losing players halfway through.
  • Attacking Princess Moira when a quest requires her alive.
  • Opening Dark Coffers without controlling the spawned constructs.
  • Pulling through doors or bridges without watching patrols.
  • Treating the Lyceum as ordinary trash instead of a timed torch objective.
