Scholomance

Recommended levels, location and preparation for an ordinary Scholomance group—not a boosted carry.

The short recommendation

Scholomance is a dense five-player dungeon at Caer Darrow. Someone needs the Skeleton Key, a Rogue with sufficient Lockpicking, or another valid opener for the front door. The full run contains many bosses, heavy disease and magic pressure, and several quest chains that cannot be picked up at the last minute.

Choose the run before inviting

Full clear

Kirtonos route → Jandice/Rattlegore → Viewing Room → six miniboss rooms → Darkmaster Gandling.

Quest chain

Krastinov leads to Kirtonos and eventually Ras Frostwhisper; expect repeat visits.

Class event

Paladin, Shaman and Warlock level-60 chains use the Great Ossuary. Advertise these events explicitly.

Gandling target

Still requires clearing the six miniboss rooms before he appears.

Group-finder wording: use the exact route, required key or shortcut, and final boss. Clear expectations prevent more failed Classic groups than an extra level of gear.

Before travelling

  1. Complete the Western Plaguelands Skeleton Key chain or confirm another opener.
  2. Pick up Plagued Hatchlings, Barov Family Fortune and Doctor Theolen Krastinov before travel.
  3. Bring disease and magic removal where possible.
  4. Level-60 class events require their own long prerequisite chains and materials.
Version warning: this guide is for official Classic Era. Seasonal, Turtle WoW and later-expansion layouts or quest changes are intentionally excluded.

Quest pickup checklist

Classic dungeon quests often begin several zones or chain steps away. Check these before the group travels; the note tells you when a prerequisite matters.

Boss and event warnings

EncounterWhat the group must know
Kirtonos the HeraldClear the porch, use the quest blood and handle knockback away from the edge.
Jandice BarovFind the real Jandice among illusions and control the room.
RattlegoreUse Bone Armor from the room and avoid opening extra piles carelessly.
Vectus and MardukThe Viewing Room can chain pull; clear methodically before bosses.
Ras FrostwhisperInterrupt dangerous frost casts and complete the transformation quest step if required.
Darkmaster GandlingHe teleports players into side rooms; kill the room adds and return quickly.

Notable reasons to run it

  • Dark Runes — valuable mana consumable drops
  • Deathbone Guardian pieces — tank-oriented set from minibosses
  • Necropile set pieces — caster set from minibosses
  • Headmaster's Charge — Darkmaster Gandling
  • Tier 0 helm pieces — Darkmaster Gandling
  • Bonecreeper Stylus — Darkmaster Gandling; healing wand

Loot tables are broad and drop chances vary. Treat this as a target shortlist, not a promise that every item is best for every spec or phase.

Role checklist

Tank

Own the route

Mark dangerous targets, use line-of-sight, watch patrols and pause before scripted events. State when a pull depends on crowd control.

Healer

Plan the recovery

Drink before events, call for dispels and tell the group when mana is not ready. Do not let an impatient pull conceal the real cause of a wipe.

Damage

Control beats padding

Interrupt, dispel, protect the healer and respect marked crowd control. A dead dangerous caster improves the run more than area damage on harmless targets.

Common wipe and wasted-time risks

  • Arriving without door access.
  • Opening bone piles around Rattlegore indiscriminately.
  • Chain pulling the Viewing Room through fleeing enemies.
  • Starting a class event without the required quest stage.
  • Failing to dispel diseases and magic effects before they compound.
