The short recommendation

Skinning is the lowest-friction first-character gathering profession: kill beasts you were already fighting, skin them and sell the stacks. Pair it with Leatherworking only if you want that craft; otherwise combine Skinning with another gathering profession for simple levelling income.

What Skinning actually feels like

Skinning needs little route planning because the materials follow ordinary beast kills. Its weakness is opportunity value: common leather can be less valuable than contested ore or herbs at level 60. The profession still excels while levelling, in beast-heavy farms and when supplying premium hides such as Devilsaur Leather.

Price warning: orange, yellow and green recipe economics change by realm. This guide gives stable material bands and decision points rather than pretending one exact shopping list is cheapest everywhere.

Stay on an inexpensive recipe or reliable node while it remains productive. Move when skill-ups become too slow or the next material tier is genuinely cheaper—not merely because a guide’s number says so.

Training gates and special decisions

  1. Carry a Skinning Knife; some special knives or effects can add skill.
  2. A useful rule is required skill near five times the beast level, with high-level exceptions; keep the profession close to your character level.
  3. You can often skin corpses killed by others after they loot them, but do not interfere with an active group’s agreed skinner.
  4. Many dragonkin and unusual creatures are skinnable even when they are not ordinary beasts.

“Keep” means check its use and current value. It does not mean fill a bank forever; sell materials when funding mounts, spells or bags creates more value for your character.

What 300 skill is for

Leather supply

Rugged Leather has broad levelling and endgame crafting demand.

Premium farms

Devilsaur, dragon scales and raid hides can outperform ordinary beast circuits.

Low-friction income

A relaxed beast farm produces vendor loot and leather without node competition.

Best classes and pairings

Hunters kill beasts efficiently, Druids move quickly and Rogues contest dangerous premium spawns safely. Any levelling character benefits because the gathering happens after normal combat.

Common Skinning mistakes

  • Letting Skinning fall too far behind character level.
  • Leaving the knife in the bank.
  • Crafting low-demand Leatherworking items when raw leather sells better.
  • Assuming every high-level creature is skinnable.
  • Starting arguments over corpses instead of agreeing one skinner in a group.
