Shadowfang Keep

Recommended levels, location and preparation for an ordinary Shadowfang Keep group—not a boosted carry.

The short recommendation

SFK is a compact castle with doors that open through boss progression, dangerous caster packs and several ledge or courtyard pulls. Horde has the main quest package; Paladin and Warlock class chains provide the usual Alliance reasons to make the journey.

Choose the run before inviting

Standard clear

Rethilgore → Razorclaw → Silverlaine → Springvale → Odo → Fenrus → Nandos → Arugal.

Class-quest run

State the Paladin or Warlock objective before travel; faction access and journey time differ sharply.

Courtyard and tower

Clear runners and casters before climbing; later doors depend on prior bosses.

Before travelling

  1. Horde should collect Arugal Must Die, The Book of Ur and Deathstalkers in Shadowfang.
  2. Bring interrupts and dispels for shadow casters, curses and disease.
  3. Alliance groups should set a summon or safe travel plan through Horde territory.
  4. Control pets on stairs, walls and courtyard drops.
Version warning: official Classic Era only. Turtle WoW, seasonal and later-expansion layouts are excluded.

Quest pickup checklist

These are the key Classic Era quests to check before travelling. “Both” means the quest is available to both factions—not that reaching the dungeon is equally convenient.

Boss and event warnings

EncounterWhat the group must know
Baron SilverlaineExpect a summoned worgen spirit and keep control of the room.
Commander SpringvaleKill or control his guards and interrupt dangerous casts.
Odo the BlindwatcherHis damage increases as health falls; save cooldowns for the end.
Fenrus / Voidwalker eventAfter Fenrus, defeat the summoned voidwalkers before leaving.
Wolf Master NandosHandle waves of wolves before Nandos joins.
Archmage ArugalSpread for magic, interrupt when possible and handle his teleports without chasing into danger.

Notable reasons to run it

  • Robes of Arugal — Arugal
  • Belt of Arugal — Arugal
  • Feline Mantle — Silverlaine
  • Meteor Shard — Arugal
  • Shadowfang and Assassin’s Blade — very rare zone drops

Drop chances vary and rare items are targets, not promises. Compare upgrades for your actual class and level.

Role checklist

Tank

Control the route

Mark dangerous targets, use line-of-sight and pause before events. Protect the healer before chasing damage.

Healer

Call your mana

Drink before scripted waves, prioritise dispels and stop impatient pulls while resources are low.

Damage

Interrupt and control

Respect marked targets, stop dangerous casts and prevent runners from collecting another pack.

Common wipe and wasted-time risks

  • Allowing fleeing humanoids to collect another room.
  • Pet pathing over castle walls or stairs.
  • Pulling Arugal while the group is spread across platforms.
  • Assuming Alliance has the same quest bundle as Horde.
